My Desk Tour

My Desk Tour

Hey lovelies!

I love my desk. As weird as that might be to admit, my desk space is one of my favourite places in my home. Working from home means that I spend a lot of time here, so it’s really important to me for it to be a place that inspires me and fuels my creativity. Every thing on my desk, big or small, is something that brings me joy. So I thought I would share that joy with you!

*Please note: This post contains affiliate links. These will be marked with an *. I may make a small commission from any purchases made through these links, at no extra cost to you.

First up – the actual desk. I have this desk top and these legs from IKEA. In my mind you can’t go wrong with an IKEA desk – they’re sturdy, cheap, and last for ages. My desk chair is also from IKEA, and I have this little filing cabinet sitting next to my desk. My lamp is also IKEA, as is my white storage box, which I use for cables, washi tape, USB sticks, etc.

[foogallery id=”1620″]

I’m currently using the 13″ Macbook Air, and I always have it on this little bamboo laptop stand*. I love the bamboo, and it is the perfect height to make working on my laptop easier. To the left of my laptop I’ve got my notebooks. These are just the ones I’m currently using, there are loads more in my drawers (yes, I’m a notebook fiend)! My bullet journal is usually open on my desk. I’m currently using the Moleskine Large Dotted Notebook* and am always using my favourite Pilot Juice Pens* and Mildliners*. I’ll be writing a blog post all about why I bullet journal soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

always have a candle burning, and I’m currently burning the Bath and Body Works Eucalyptus Mint candle – it’s bloody amazing. I got my super cute bamboo pen pot from Wilko, but here’s* a similar one on Amazon! And of course, I’ve got my trusty Glossier Balm Dotcom.

(pssst – click here* for 10% off your first Glossier order!)

[foogallery id=”1622″]

I always have music playing, either from Spotify (heres the playlist I’ve been loving recently), or through my Crosley Record Player. I’m a big fan of old vinyl, I absolutely love the static-y sound of an old record. More often than not, if I’m using my record player, it’ll be Nat King Cole or Otis Redding. Bliss.

Next to my record player I’ve got this cute little vase from Flying Tiger, which will usually have some fresh flowers in. I love having fresh flowers in the house – they bring so much life to any room.

Above is my mini gallery wall. This is full of postcards, polaroids, and Rifle Paper Co. prints.

[foogallery id=”1623″]

On to my shelves. These are the Ekby Lavia shelves with the Ekby Stodis brackets from IKEA.

The top shelf houses my Captain America Funk Pop! Vinyl Figures*. If you’ve read my 10 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Me post, then you’ll know how much I love Captain America. I have all of the figures from each Marvel movie (except the one from The First Avenger – this was a limited edition Comic Con one, and is rather difficult to find), as well as the cute little vintage-inspired one*. I would love to collect all of them!

The lower shelf is where I keep everything I need for University: my textbooks, notebooks, sticky notes, plus whatever novels I’m currently reading. I’ve also got an Aladdin Funko Pop!* because, obviously. The adorable Dachshund print, and the Nailed It print, are both actually Rifle Paper Co. greeting cards that I’ve framed! Finally, the teddy bear is actually one that I was given when my parents got married, and that I held instead of a bouquet on the day (see picture below – that’s me, Nathan, and his little sister!).

Not going to lie here, I bloody love my windowsill. I’ve got two succulents, a little plush elephant that’s just adorable, a photo of me and my grandparents, and another Rifle Paper Co. print

[foogallery id=”1636″]

Aaaaand there you have it! That’s my desk! As I said before, I absolutely love my desk space, and it makes all the difference when I’m working from home. I’d recommend anyone that works from home to take the time to make their desk absolutely perfect, and to only have things on it that actually bring you joy (not to go all Marie Kondo on you).

I would love to see what your desk/workspace looks like! You can leave me a comment below, or tag me in your instagram pics @justcallmeringo ☺️

Love always,

Emily ❤️

10 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Me

10 Things You Probably Don’t Know
About Me

Hey lovelies!

We’ve been friends now for a few months, so I thought it was high time I tell you a little more about myself. Here are 10 things that you probably don’t know about me:

1. I spent six years living in America

My family moved out to Northern California in 2009, when I was thirteen years old. I lived there until I was nineteen, when I moved back to England. Although I loved my time living there, and I made some of the best friends I’ve ever had (shoutout to the Nerd Squad ❤️), America never really felt like home, and I missed the beautiful English rain.

[foogallery id=”1581″]

2. I don’t drink alcohol

Yep, no drinks for me! I’ve never really seen the appeal of getting drunk, and part of me living in America during my teen years meant that I missed the good old British tradition of drunken teen house parties. That, coupled with my stomach’s seemingly deep hatred of alcohol, means that I’ll be having water?

3. I can’t eat dairy

I still get very sad about this, but yes, I am part of the lactose intolerance club. This is something that has only developed in the last five years or so, which means that I can still remember the taste of cheese. And no, I am not one of those lactose intolerants that can still eat dairy and just suffer through the consequences…if I eat anything that contains cheese, I’ll end up in bed for a couple of days.

4. Chocolate is one of my favourite things in the world

Ironic, huh? I looooove chocolate, and it’s something that I eat on almost a daily basis. However, since becoming lactose intolerant, I’m now a dark chocolate lover. But god do I miss Cadbury’s.

5. I’m a massive Marvel fan

I was introduced to Marvel at a really difficult time in my life, and I’ve loved it ever since. My favourite character is Captain America, by far. Last December I got to go to the Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. in London and it was so amazing. I may or may not have actually cried when I saw Captain America’s actual bike from Avengers: Age of Ultron & the actual costume Chris Evans wore in the film (see #10). Marvel is something that means so much to me, but that I find it really difficult to explain.

[foogallery id=”1584″]

6. I will pick a Disney film over almost anything

Oh yeah, you heard that right. I absolutely love Disney films, especially the classics. I could watch Aladdin or The Sword in the Stone any day. I’ll never turn down Disney.

7. I’m a true dog person

I adore dogs with just about every fibre of my being. I grew up with dogs, and it was one of the best things in the world. Since moving back to England, it’s been really bloody difficult to adjust to not having a little buddy. If you ever want to make me smile, send me a cute dog video ?

8. I’ve known Nathan since I was about three years old

Nathan and I met because our parents were friends when we were young. We lost touch after his family moved away and we moved to the States, but we ended up getting back in touch over Facebook and becoming best friends. Fast forward a few years, and here we are. We’re true childhood sweethearts ❤️

[foogallery id=”1587″]

9. I’ve always wanted to live in Paris

Yes, I know how cliché this is, but I’ve loved Paris ever since I first visited it as a child. I love the idea of living in Paris for a few years to write, like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. The movie Midnight in Paris is basically my dream life!

10. I cry…a lot…at everything.

Yep. I’m a crier. I cry at literally everything. Disney movies (I’m looking at you, Tangled), cute dog videos, any kind of emotional story arc in a TV show, even a good emosh tweet. I’m not even ashamed.

Hopefully you feel like you know me a bit more now, but I would love to hear if there’s anything else you’d like to know! Leave me a comment with a question ??

Love always,

Emily ❤️

Valentine’s Day Red Velvet Cupcakes

_DSC1907

Valentine’s Day Red Velvet Cupcakes

Hey lovelies!

With Valentine’s Day now just a couple of days away, I thought this was the perfect opportunity for me to share my Red Velvet Cupcake recipe!

[foogallery id=”1558″]

These guys are super light, fluffy, and absolutely delicious. They’re perfectly coloured – red, but not reeeeeeed. Red Velvet cupcakes are perfect as a treat for Valentine’s Day, or even a homemade gift.

[foogallery id=”1574″]

For decoration, all I did was melt some chocolate and use a piping bag to draw hearts on a baking tray, then stick them on top once they’ve cooled and set. I also crumbled up a spare cupcake to sprinkle on some of them. Super easy, but really effective and pretty!

Read the recipe below:

[ultimate-recipe id=1557][foogallery id=”1575″]

I hope you enjoy these little beauties, and I would love to see how you decorate them! You can leave me a comment below, or tag me in your Instagram photos @justcallmeringo.

Love always,

Emily ❤️

Canterbury: A City Guide

_DSC1922

Canterbury: A City Guide

Hey lovelies!

I thought it was time for me to do my first proper city guide, and Canterbury is the perfect city for it! It’s a gorgeous city, full of history and character, and is the perfect size for a day of exploring.

I’ll be sharing my favourite things to see, do, and the best spots to eat!

Things to see

The Crooked House

This house fell crooked after alternations to a chimney went wrong. It was named after Sir John Boys, and was used for the Kings School until recently when it was converted to a charity bookshop. It’s a great spot for a unique Instagram!

The Dunk Chair & The River

The chair, suspended over the river at the Old Weaver’s House, was once a witches ducking stool in the 16th and 17th Century. Women suspected of witchcraft would be dunked into the river; if they floated, they were guilty, but if they drowned, they were innocent (although they were already dead).

In the summer, one of the best ways to see the city is to take a river tour on one of the many gondola-style boats that fill the banks.

[foogallery id=”1503″]

Westgate Tower

Canterbury’s West Gate is the largest surviving medieval tower in England. You can climb to the top, which gives you incredible views of the city.

The Cobbled Streets

I know, I know, you can see cobbled streets in a lot of English cities. But. Paired with the historic buildings and gorgeous shop fronts, Canterbury’s cobbled streets give the city the perfect atmosphere.

[foogallery id=”1504″]

Things to Do

Tour the Cathedral

I can’t write a city guide without mentioning Canterbury Cathedral. The Cathedral is the Mother Church to the Anglican faith, and is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The architecture alone is absolutely beautiful, and definitely a must-see.

[foogallery id=”1505″]

Cream Tea at Tiny Tim’s

Tiny Tim’s Tea Room is a Canterbury staple, and for good reason. The scones and cakes are absolutely delicious, and the tea room itself is adorable! It’s the perfect spot for afternoon tea.

[foogallery id=”1506″]

The Canterbury Tales

This is the perfect experience for any lover of classic English literature. You re-live Chaucer’s Canterbury tales as you make your own pilgrimage!

The Marlowe Theatre

And finally, for any theatre lover there is always something to see at the Marlowe Theatre!

Best Lunch Spots

Canteen

Canteen is a lovely little cafe, and a great place to go for a home-style lunch.

(psst – their paninis are the best)

Oscar and Bentley’s

If you have any allergies or food intolerances, Oscar and Bentley’s is the best place for you! Their entire menu is gluten-free, and most of the menu is dairy-free. The food is incredible, the staff are always friendly, and it has the most amazing ambiance. This is one of my favourite spots in Canterbury!

[foogallery id=”1507″]

Best Dinner Spots

Posillipo

Tucked away behind the Cathedral, this little bistro makes some of the best Italian food I have ever eaten. The cosy, warm ambiance makes it the perfect spot for a romantic dinner!

Cafe des Amis

If you’re after amazing, authentic Mexican food with a fun, quirky atmosphere, look no further than Cafe des Amis. Decorated with unique local art and bright colours, the vibe in this place is like no other!

Love always,

Emily ❤

My Favourite Chocolate Chip Cookies

_DSC1892

My Favourite Chocolate Chip Cookies

Hey lovelies!

Got another amazing recipe for you – this time it’s my all-time favourite chocolate chip cookies ?

Who doesn’t love a soft, gooey, chocolate chip cookie? In my opinion, there is no better treat at the end of the day. This recipe is super easy and no-nonsense, but they key is chilling the dough. It may sound like an unnecessary step, but after you’ve tried it once you’ll never make cookies without chilling the dough again.

These cookies are also super easy to make dairy-free (which I usually do), by swapping the butter for any dairy-free spread – I use VitaLite – and making sure the dark chocolate chips are vegan.

Here’s the recipe:

[ultimate-recipe id=1428]

I absolutely love these cookies, and I hope you will too! Let me know if you try them in the comments below, or if you have any tips for making perfect chocolate chip cookies!

Love always,

Emily ❤️

13 Books I’d Like to Read in 2019

13 Books I’d Like to Read in 2019

Hey lovelies!

One of my goals for 2019 is to get back into reading, and of course, being an organisation lover and control freak, I thought the best way to set myself up for success was to write a list!

Reading has always been a big passion of mine – you don’t go to University for literature if you don’t like reading ? However, since I started studying, I’ve noticed that I’ve almost completely stopped reading for myself.

Nah. Not good enough.

Time to change it! Here is my list of books I’d like to read throughout this year:

*Please note: this post contains affiliate links. I may make a small commission from any purchases made through these links, with no added cost to you! Thank you for your support.

  1.  The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck by Sarah Knight
  2. Get Your Sh*t Together by Sarah Knight
  3. You do You by Sarah Knight
  4. The Self-Care Project by Jayne Hardy
  5. What Happened by Hillary Clinton
  6. Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott
  7. The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron
  8. Milk and Honey by Rupi Kapur
  9. The Cows by Dawn O’Porter
  10. Bloom by Esteé Lalonde
  11. Becoming by Michelle Obama
  12. Feminists Don’t Wear Pink (and other lies) by Scarlett Curtis
    And finally…
  13. I’d like to get started on the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. I’ve never read any of them, and absolutely love the films, so I think it’s time I read them!!

We’ll see how many of these I actually end up reading!

I’d love to know what books you’re looking forward to reading this year, or if you have any recommendations for me! Let me know in the comments below ??

Love always,

Emily ❤️

My Goals for 2019

WhatsApp Image 2019-01-11 at 18.07.07(1)

My Goals for 2019

Hey lovelies!

Ahh…the dreaded New Year’s Resolutions. There’s just something about this prospect that makes me feel a little bit queasy. There’s so much pressure nowadays to come up with (and stick to) really profound resolutions. So this year I decided not to do it.

Instead, I’ve decided to set myself three goals for both my personal and professional life (professional referring to my blog and shop) this year. You might be thinking, isn’t a goal just another word for a resolution? and you might be right, but for me the word ‘goal’ feels so much friendlier. There’s so much less pressure to stick to them every single day, rather, I can look back on the year as a whole. Let’s do this.

Personal:

  1.  Take care of myself. This year I want to make sure I’m really taking care of both my physical and mental health. I’ve been dealing with some pretty major health issues for the last three years, and I want this year to be the year I finally kick it in the butt.
  2.  Read more. Okay, yes, I already read a lot for my University degree, but since I started studying literature I’ve noticed that I’ve basically stopped reading for myself, and it’s time to change that.
  3.  Eat healthier lunches. Working from home means that I often don’t put much thought into what I’m eating for lunch, and this year I’d like to start being more mindful of what I’m eating and start being more creative with my lunches.

Professional:

  1.  Get 1000 page views. While this may not sound like a lot, to reach 1000 page views a month on here would be a Big Deal for me, and this year I really want to focus on growing the blog.
  2. Make my first £100. Again, £100 may not sound like much, but if I’m able to make £100 from my shop or from here, it would mean so so much!
  3.  Master Pinterest. Not gonna lie, Pinterest scares me a bit. So, this year I want to master it!

What are your goals for 2019? Let me know in the comments! ??

Love always,

Emily ❤️

My Bullet Journal Set-Up for 2019

IMG_2107

My Bullet Journal Set-Up for 2019

Hey lovelies!

The new year brings so many good things, one of my favourite being setting up my planner for the year. This year is slightly different though, as for the first year for a long time I haven’t bought a new planner! It feels so strange, and to be honest I’m still not sure how I feel about it and I might still end up getting a new one…

I have a good reason to be planner-less this year: I’m continuing my bullet journal! I spoke a little bit about my bullet journal in my December Plan With Me post, and I will be doing an entire post on why I decided to start bullet journalling soon, as well as all the lists and pages in my journal.

I thought I’d share how I’ve set up 2019 in my bullet journal with you, and hopefully give you some inspiration for yours! I wanted to be a little bit more minimalistic with my bullet journal this year, which you’ll see throughout how I’ve set it up.

I started the year off with a 2019 calendar spread, showing each month. I’ve given each month a colour, and have highlighted birthdays with that colour and will use this colour in those monthly spreads. I’ve also included a list of birthdays so it’s all in one place!

After the calendar, I’ve got my reading wishlist and yearly goals. I really want to read more (outside of university reading) this year, and I think having a list of all the books I want to read will really help! Look out for a blog post all about this coming your way soon! I’ve split my 2019 goals into personal and professional, and they’re blank at the moment because I’ve got a whole blog post about my yearly goals coming soon!

That’s everything I’ve done for the new year, but I wanted to share how I’ve set January up as it’s changed a little bit for the new year!

As always. I’ve started with my January title page and monthly spread. I’ve gone for a blue snowflake theme as hopefully we’ll be seeing some snowfall this month! My monthly calendar looks so bare in comparison to December! I’m giving myself a little break after the craziness of the festive period.

Next up is my monthly habit, health, and mood tracker! I’ve gone a little bit more minimalistic with the tracker this year, sticking with black and grey, and I loooove it!

And lastly, my weekly spread. The format is quite similar to how I’ve had it in the past, but again I’ve made it a little bit more minimalistic, keeping mostly to black and white with little accents of blue. I’ve also gotten rid of the mini calendar, as it wasn’t really serving a purpose.

Aaaand that’s my 2019 bullet journal! I hope this has given you ideas for your bullet journal or inspired you to create one! Here are the products I use for mine:

Please note: These are affiliate links. I may make a small commission on any purchases, with no additional cost to you. Thank you for your support!

I would love to see how you’ve set up your planner for 2019! Tag me in your photos on instagram @justcallmeringo, or leave a a comment below!

Love always,

Emily ❤️
